I normally love Jenoff's book but this one fell a little flat, and the characters somewhat underdeveloped.  I was interested to learn about the Levitan though, not a part of WWII history I'd ever heard about before.

Louise is a seemingly ordinary housewife in 1950s England when a chance discovery in a thrift store sets off a string of memories about the war and leads her to seek answers.

Helaine is a sheltered teenager in 1930s/40s Paris, a chance encounter leads to a whirlwind romance and estrangement from her family, but then war breaks out.

As the novel progresses each character proceeds on their journey towards the climax of the novel, but it all felt a little lacking as I wasn't invested in the characters.  Way too many coincidences to be realistic, even for a more sparsely populated time
