The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

3.0

I read The Wonderful Wizard of Old at the age of 19, and it made me realise why I started reading in the first place., at the age of 3.

It is, in the traditional sense, a book for children, but it is so worth the read at any age, because it sends the strong message that everyone can dream. People always think of interest in books maturing with age, but every once in a while, it is really relieving to read something that you know for sure is as lighthearted, beautiful and magical as a children's book.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has a very blanket approach towards morality, kindness, helpfulness and other virtues that is rather difficult to explain to children. What is really different from other didactic books is that it completely avoids the gore associated with death. The moral is not shoved into your face, but presented well as one would to a child with a playful story associated with every quality.

It is completely removed from the world of contemporary fiction set in a land of fairytale. It has very similar themes to Alice in Wonderland.

A delightful read, I will recommend, irrespective of age.
