The Last Hellion
by Loretta Chase
I really, really enjoyed reading this book. I’ve read a few Loretta Chase’s, and I’ve read one other book in this series, Lord of Scoundrels, which is one of my favourite historical romances. But I think I might actually like this one more.
The story is well-written and well-plotted. There’s a lot going on in this book - there are many different threads to the story aside from the romance between Vere and Lydia. Some of these stories are sweet, others are thrilling, and they all combine into an exciting and fun novel. It covers some dark topics - covered in the content warning, because there are some very grim aspects to this novel - but overall the book was quite lighthearted. That said, I quite admired how seriously the topics in question were handled given the humorous tone of other areas of the novel. It was just put together really well.
I adored Lydia. She is a brilliant heroine. She was such a complicated character full of contradictions and she felt very, very real to me. I loved how she handled all the situations that she ended up in, and that she was never a damsel in distress.
I didn’t think I was going to like Vere at first, but by the end, I loved him. He was quite a sensitive character for someone who was meant to be a hellion, and I found his own lack of self-awareness in that regard charming as it went on. I really liked how quickly he came to develop an affection for Lydia and the things he did to show his love for her.
They were well-matched, their relationship was really believable and felt very strong. They had a lot of chemistry, and the sex scenes in this book were really well-written. But they also had some very sweet moments - his declaration of love was adorable, as was her acceptance of it. I just liked all the little moments in their relationships - the banter and the little asides that showed how much they really cared for each other.
Also, one thing I really liked was that
The side characters were good fun and I liked the side plots involving them, particularly Bertie and Tamsin, and the two sisters working in the background was good fun. A small detail I really enjoyed was actually Lydia’s dog, Susan; I liked that she was written almost as a human character, it was a funny addition.
I would recommend it if you want a fast-paced, well-written historical romance with some mystery and thriller elements with a sense of humour.

Spoiler
after they married, Vere admitted he hadn’t really thought through what would happen next. It was an honest response to the situation, in contrast to the usual stories like this where a marriage happens partway through - he married her for lust, but realised after the fact that he truly cared about her - and his acknowledgement that he hadn’t really considered what it would be like to actually be married I thought was a nice touch. The side characters were good fun and I liked the side plots involving them, particularly Bertie and Tamsin, and the two sisters working in the background was good fun.
