The Rise and Reign of the Mammals: A New History, from the Shadow of the Dinosaurs to Us by Steve Brusatte

5.0

I’ve read his book on dinosaurs as well, and I think they’re two of the finest natural history books I’ve ever read. He never sacrifices complexity for readability, instead striking a well-developed balance (I found myself thrilled to read like 20 pages straight about jaw hinge evolution), and I appreciate the way his never-intrusive bits about paleontological discovery clearly highlight the essential contributions of women and indigenous peoples to the field, written with generosity and unselfconscious admiration that’s infectious. 10/10, love weird mammals.
