Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder

challenging emotional funny inspiring sad medium-paced

5.0

I’m so glad that I discovered this emotional and beautiful graphic memoir whilst watching book tube! Dancing at the pity party is such a refreshing book about loss, love, family and the process of grieving a mother. Although the topics are devastating, the way that Tyler writes and draws is truly exceptional conveying her true emotions in an honest and humorous way. It is very raw and difficult to read in many places but also so enjoyable to hear the love for her and her mother’s relationship shine through. She sounds like a spectacular woman!

I really appreciated learning from someone who has been through, what I would consider, one of the worst things to happen to a person. I also enjoyed learning about Jewish funeral traditions and rituals around death. It is quite informative too, specifically the parts explaining the right and wrong things to say to someone who is grieving.

Thank you to Tyler Feder for being so open about her experiences - this will help so many people. Plus the illustrations are super fun and add so much to the story.
