The Last Alchemist: And the Love of His Life by Poe Hawkins

2.0

This book was actually terrible. The characters were the most horrible people.

Trigger Warnings:
Spoilerimplied rape, age gap bordering on paedophilia, slurs used throughout the novel, especially r*t**d

The main character, Ken, is worried about the alchemist being a rapist... BUT HE'S JUST AS BAD! And his choices are between
Spoilermurder and suicide
, his moral dilemma throughout the book - I almost wish it ended in
Spoilersuicide
.

Some of the resulting stories and characters were okay. I was rooting for Joel and Kylie to figure things out the whole time - but it fell flat. There was so much that could have been done better that whole time, but they didn't get enough screen time.

Then there was Ken. He was an asshole ten times over. His lust over Beth, a nineteen year old, was disgusting, and it was even more disgusting that this was readily accepted in the context of the book. He's in his forties! I hate that this was what drives the book.

The sequel is mildly interesting, only in that I care about Kylie and Joel. It's not interesting enough for me to buy the book. This has the same vibes as [b:Caging Skies|25641300|Caging Skies|Christine Leunens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1501659434l/25641300._SY75_.jpg|45459223] and I hate it, and never want to think about it again.
