Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin
4.0

Reading this novel was like a breath of fresh air. Due to my wary relationship with mainstream (often white authored) Christian related works, I never considered that a work could so authentically portray Black charismatic church experiences until I picked up this novel. I never thought that someone could make the church in all its beauty and flaws come alive as Baldwin has done. This is, however, not simply a story of Black Christianity. It is also a story of Black family, Black America, and Black sexuality. It's a story of identity--where it comes from, how it grows, and how it falters. It's a beautiful story, and I truly wish more people--particularly Christians in other traditions--would be exposed to it.
