Peony in Love by Lisa See

4.0

3.7 stars but I rounded up (very specific I know)

“All women on earth—and men too, for that matter—hope for the kind of love that transforms us, raises us up out of everyday, and gives us the courage to survive our little deaths: the heartache of unfulfilled dreams, of career and personal disappointments, of broken love affairs.” - Lisa See, Authors Note

Peony in Love is not a light or easy story, but it is also not depressing or miserable. Lisa See did a remarkable job of keeping this story heartbreakingly and joyfully human. No one is perfect, there are endless misunderstandings and jealousies and avoidable pains, but such is life. It has also made me very curious about the Peony Pavilion, the Three Wives Commentary, and Ancient Chinese history, which I believe to be a sign of excellent historical fiction, something that makes you want to dive deeper and learn more.

also necessary before beginning the story is a trigger warning for mentions of disordered eating, rape, and suicide
