Hidden Warrior by Lynn Flewelling

3 1/2, maybe. It suffered from middle-book syndrome, where it felt like it was treading water until the big climatic moment at the end that sets up the final book. Definitely could have been tightened up. That said, I was really into the push-pull of the main character and his coming to grips with the fact that he was born a girl and will be (magically) changed back to a woman in order to fulfill a prophecy. Really looking forward to the last book.
