The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America by Carol Anderson

5.0

Really effective shift in focus: by articulating the purpose and historical context of the Second Amendment (how and why it came to be, how it has been used through different eras), Anderson allows us to see how discussions about modern-day disparities in the “right to bear arms” are not new issues; instead, these disparities are ingrained in the purpose and repeated application of the Amendment itself.

A shorter read than I anticipated (the research and thus notes are substantial), it is nonetheless covers centuries of law and events. It’s accessible, though aided by a general understanding of US history and systemic racism.

Obviously not a part of my review, but notable that the binding on my copy was quite irritating: the pages consistently stuck together at the spine, which was a bit annoying. Perhaps should have waited for the paperback!
