The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts
by Maxine Hong Kingston
A fine reading group book. We had plenty to talk about. The individual sections were well written; mythic autobiography, heroic family autobiography, less heroic autobiography . . . not sure how the sections fit together, though. At one point our heroine insists that if her mother would just hear what she had to say, she would change, the world would change, the revolution would come. The narrative hints at the naivety of that thesis, but it's so counter to the text itself it's never engaged, which was a little dissatisfying.
