I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara

4.0

I think I know why this took so long to finish. It’s hard to read about victims, more than the life of a killer. In most cases of true crime, the monster seems to overshadow everyone else. We’re more intrigued by Ed Kemper’s family history than the lives he ended.

This book was so interesting yet hard to swallow. It’s obviously not a flowery topic, but the fact that it’s still kind of an unsolved case is all the more chilling. Especially in this century, we’re so sure that forensic data can’t fail us.

But I also really enjoyed Michelle McNamara’s writing style and the feeling that “I’ll be Gone in the Dark” was just as much a memoir as it was a true crime novel. It’s really amazing to think about the amount of research she put into this. I also liked that her friends and family made sure the book was finished after her death. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who’s interested in true crime.
