The bridegroom finds himself even more entrenched in the fairy tales he loves when he marries the rich and enigmatic Indigo. Sent back to her family manor to care for her dying aunt, he begins to uncover what happened to Indigo's best friend, Azure.

This is my third Roshani Chokshi, and finally we have a real winner. I could tell I could like her with her other books because I liked her writing, and was holding out for a story that I liked just as much. It's not big on plot, but I think that served the story. This isn't about the plot, it's about the tone, atmosphere, and emotions. The writing style and the way it portrays the characters' experiences drives the story. Some might think it's purple prose, but I enjoyed it. This offers some twists on the gothic genre, switching up some classic character roles. I liked this showing the desire to get away from the real world, ways people control each other, and how this felt like it was emulating a fairy tale itself. The plot twist - if the reader is meant to think it is a twist - is obvious from the opening chapters; I've read that twist a million times so I was looking for more from the ending. I also could have done with learning more about the Otherworld and specifics of what they believe about it. Lastly, this is neither a pro or a con, but I'm not sure I'd categorize this as fantasy! It's definitely inspired by fairy tales and has a darkly whimsical atmosphere, but I don't think this has anything fantastical in it.

Overall, this was a story that gothic fans are going to love. Even though the ending was predictable, the writing style had me unable to put this down.
