Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty by Esther Duflo, Abhijit V. Banerjee

4.0

This book is about the economic lives of the extremely poor- those living on less than $1 per day. It makes the crucial point that the poor are not homogeneous, and also that many erroneous assumptions (as well as judgements) are made about the poor and how they choose to act economically.

Situated firmly in the Sachs-Easterly debate, which by now is rather old hat (more aid is needed to be effective versus cut all aid in order to be effective), this book is a helpful review with recommendations about how better to tailor poverty-alleviation interventions. I recommend it for any development professional or volunteer.
