Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

2.0

Reads like John Green - or better, chronologically speaking, Green reads like Dessen. Or maybe it's just that I hadn't read any YA since Green?

This book is certainly not new, but because of it's lasting fame in the world of YA I thought I'd use this for a bit of escapist reading. I don't regret it: it triggers some important issues such as depression, eating disorders and some other more spoiler-y things, while giving way to a few heart-warming moments. All in all, a decent effort, even if I'd be happier the narrator wouldn't justify all her coming-of-age so poignantly with her new boyfriend. It's okay to get help when you're down, but the greatest help here came from within.

But you know what? I'm getting to think that it will be hard for me to rate dramatic YA novels over 3 stars. Most of them are fine, but very rarely are they brilliant.
