The Boy at the Top of the Mountain by John Boyne

3.0

This book is thought provoking and encourages discussion by allowing for inference. However, I believe it’s missing something vital, especially if children are going to be reading this book. There is no mention of the main character being a child and therefore not fully to blame for the situations that he’s put in. Towards the end, the one maid basically says, “You should’ve known better, and you can’t pretend you didn’t.” And I take a lot of issue with this statement because kids don’t know better. Especially a kid being partially raised by Hitler, who came into this situation with a load of trauma.
