The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington by Brad Meltzer, Josh Mensch

4.0

The First Conspiracy reads very much like Meltzer's novels. It's a fast-paced, engaging, and fun read. Unlike his novels, The First Conspiracy is also educational.

While I'm by no means a Revolutionary War expert, I've read several books on the subject. Enough to know Meltzer is correct when he asserts in the author's note that very little has been written on the conspiracy to kidnap or assassinate George Washington in the early days of the Revolution.

Much of it remains unknown even today. But Melzer does an admirable job of sifting through the evidence that does remain, and the result is a very readable account of the British attempt to nip the Revolution in the bud by infiltrating not just the Continental army, but Washington's elite Life Guards.
