Well, I’m happy to have finally read a book where my 4 years of Latin helped me understand the world building. For a dead language, it surely made the book feel alive (my attempt at a pun 😜).

Let me just say, a lot of men tend to write fantasy books and make it a lot more complicated than they need to be (this is me looking at Dune, The Hobbit, etc.), and while I do think there were parts of this book that could of been simpler and still had the same effect, I actually really enjoyed it.

It took a min to get into, but once that first fighting scene was introduced I was hooked! I LOVED the plot twists, a lot of them were right there hidden in plain sight, which are always my favorite. And some of the questions were left open, as I’m sure the next book(s) will answer.

Overall, I had a really fun time with this book. It was a fantasy inspired by Roman Empire and Latin, with its own unique magic system (that I am still trying to understand lol). The plot always kept moving, and it really kept me on my toes and it feels like a web of deceit and you’re always wondering who you can trust (as a Scorpio this was hard for me to read 😔, this is also sarcasm!)

Also, even though my previous paragraph noted it was the last, I really enjoyed the main character and thought he was really well thought out and his actions always felt true to him. Those last 100 pages did feel like the Hunger Games & I very much enjoyed it. And the lupis, got me thinking of a certain Roman myth, and I’m intrigued to see how that plays out.
