“Home is a choice.”

This brought me all the V.E. Schwab energy that I've ever wanted. It was dark, it was mysterious, it was beautiful.

The major themes in this book is something so unlike anything Schwab has emphasized in her books before. She always focuses on adventure and wanting to be free. Free from anything that could hold one back.

But in this novel, she focused on home and family (with adventure mixed in there as well - because would it be a V.E. Schwab book without some adventure?). It was about a girl who wanted to belong.

The imagery in this book was just absolutely stunning. I adore everything that V.E. creates with her words. The additional non-prose aspects like Grace's journal and the illustrations in there were amazing additions to Schwab's imaginative writing and plot.

I would say that this book gave me a The Near Witch scent and a The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue aftertaste.

I would definitely 10/10 recommend this book to Schwab fans and people looking for an abstract, whimsical, and soft worldbuilding fantasy.

Have a wonderful evening and a happy spring 🌲
