The Toll by Neal Shusterman

3.5

Like the other books in the series, this book asks interesting questions and gets creative in answering them. It also ties a neat bow around the overall story and shows how radical political and religious acts intersect with society's downward spiral.
However, although they are intertwined with the societal plot, the personal fates of the main characters sometimes felt almost like an afterthought. But they are what I'm most interested in after having been invested in their personal fates for two previous books... So it felt like the book was both slightly longer than it needed to be and did not cover enough of the interpersonal aspects because the pacing of society's downfall didn't allow for it. That's why I'd say that although still being an interesting read, this is my least favorite book in the series.
