Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs
3.0
It's Brennan vs. the white supremacist NASCAR fans!
Dead bodies have been showing up in Charlotte, right next to the NASCAR racetrack, immediately prior to a big race. Heaven forbid that something should mar this great event, and it looks like officials are trying to cover things up. Reichs admits that before this book, she didn't have much knowledge of NASCAR. Me either, and I mentally glossed over details about NASCAR she sprinkled through the book. Seriously, what white supremacist leader tracks down a forensic anthropologist to her personal residence in order to threaten her to leave his group alone and then takes the time to educate her on the finer points of NASCAR racing? *eye roll* Add in ricin poisoning, domestic terrorism, and a new potential love interest, and you've got this story.
Brennan almost dies? Check
Brennan dreams about weird crap? Double check.
These books are very formulaic. But people like consistency. It's why chain restaurants have done so well and why there are 18 books in this series. And as much as I love to complain, these books talk about real science, with real time frames. No enhancing to 11 to see the tattoos on the inside of someone's nostrils from store video footage. DNA results aren't done in 10 minutes. You never get the feel that Reichs has jumped the shark with one of her stories. Brennan isn't all-knowing, has her faults, and is wrong sometimes. I'll keep coming back to these books.
