Capture or Kill by Vince Flynn
3.0
I didn’t know what to expect with a new author, but this was meh. He seems to love info dumping things that aren’t pertinent to the actual story. How many times can he have the characters describe terrorists as shitheads? Innumerable. He made Mitch so much more aggressive and rude. At least in the past it was generally called for. Now it seems as though mere impatience is enough for him to resort to physical violence. He also made Scott Coleman seem like an ass at times.
I didn’t love the unexpected jump back in time. It had me scrambling to figure out where it fit in. Once I figured that out, I started googling what the heck Protect and Defend was even about. Which characters have we seen before? What’s the context. I forgot Irene had ever been kidnapped. I can’t remember who hasn’t died yet. For the love of god, it was thirteen books and seventeen years ago. Help a girl out.
The plot was all over the place. It seemed like he had the beginning of so many good ideas, why not just use them all. The transition to UBL raid was a weird one and while it took over, it still didn’t seem that important. Despite Rapp harping on and on about how very important everything was.
I have more I disliked, but I think at some point I’m just nitpicking. This series was never literary masterpieces, but as I was annoyed by things I noticed them more and more,.. then I just became more irritated with the book.
I do like that he’s setting the stage of Nash being disgruntled in his new position. We didn’t have much lead-up before the last book happened.
