Last Teardrop

This is not a story about vampires. It's about incredibly generic white people who just happen to be immortal and drink blood. The Cullens had more personality than the Harris clan, and Twilight remains my standard for godawful vampire books. Plus, the writing itself is very amateurish. For example, the extended flashbacks to the early nineteenth century and the 1950s. There is absolutely no attempt to evoke the mood and setting of bygone eras or to mimic the language of the time. (The 1800s characters use several jarringly modern colloquialisms - e.g. "It was pretty neat the way you drew the animal to you.") There is also a lot of Amber telling us how cold and heartless she is, yet what we're actually shown is a perfectly decent person who's just not particularly demonstrative. So she doesn't start crying when learning her coworker was suddenly hospitalized and is dying. That's not weird - he's a casual acquaintance, not anyone close to her.
And, ugh, Lance. Stalking a woman and refusing to take "no" for an answer is not romantic.
Fortunately, there is a decent amount of suspense involving a mysterious creature and the motivations of a newcomer to the Harris family (which turned out to be laughably one-dimensional, but oh well.)
