veeleen13 's review for:
Memoirs of a Geisha
by Arthur Golden
This is one of the most pretentiously-written books I've ever read.
A few things that I hate about this book:
- The narrator referring to the book/reader multiple times (ie: "As I've told you before," or, "I've previously mentioned that blah blah blah.")
- The characters are not believable or flawed enough (or, they are so flawed that they have no good qualities)
- The dialogue is atrocious. It's incredibly fake and I don't think the author has ever heard someone actually have a conversation
- SO. MANY. SIMILES. (Seriously, like over 200 in this book)
- Nature imagery got really old and cliche
- Very obvious an American wrote it when it came to the war bit
- The main character Chiyo/Sayuri seems to make no actual decisions of her own the entire time, except towards the end of the book
- It took me nearly a month to finish this thing, and I usually would finish 500 pages within a week
- I think I hated every character, especially the men
- There is no plot
- Very boring and very slow
- Nobu is kind of awful
-
So yeahhhh, I'd give it two stars because it's well-written (in terms of imagery and language and stuff), but probably one of the most boring books I have ever read. I read it because I heard it was such a good book, and the reviews were great. But actually, it kind of sucks. I learned a little bit about Japanese culture, but not as much as I expected. I kind of thought it would be more memoir-like (cause of the title?), but it was really disappointing. The only reason I would want anyone to read this book is so that they can talk about how stupid it is with me.

Spoiler
The Chairman was nice to Sayuri ONE TIME and she makes her entire life about trying to get in bed with him which doesn't happen until the last 40 pagesSo yeahhhh, I'd give it two stars because it's well-written (in terms of imagery and language and stuff), but probably one of the most boring books I have ever read.
