I'm not quite sure where to begin with The Vegetarian. It was truly a heart-breaking piece on autonomy and women's choices.
It was powerful and compelling, and while I may not have all the words to analyse or describe the anger and grief that fills this book, I wish I did.
This novel, which pivots around Yeong-hye, but never truly gives us a deep dive into her true character, save for her dreams at the start of this novel.
The almost disconnect between her body and how both her husband and brother-in-law patronised and objectified her, all for her "rebellious" decision to become vegetarian.
And finally, her sister, In-hye, who held a far more nuanced version of her sister, stuck in the "what ifs".
In particular, In-hye's segment truly stuck with me, the way she in turn describes this grief and anger which, upon caring for her sister, and losing everyone else in their family, she has only realised she has carried for so long, particularly resonated with me.
