Trombone Shorty (2015) is an autobiographical picture book by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and illustrated by Bryon Collier. It is a great book for lower elementary age kids. Trombone Shorty tells the tale of how he grew up immersed in the music of New Orleans. He got his first trombone at a young age and made music with his friends all the time, which inspired and led up to his career as a professional musician and bandleader.
This inspirational book could be used in the classroom in activities that help students identify main ideas and key details in a story. It is also just a wonderful biographical book to help students learn about a current influential figure.
