Uncomfortable reading, but a fascinating exploration of slave owner mentality. It's particularly jarring how Manon's unwavering conviction that Sarah is her property, combined with the view that she is also morally responsible for her own actions, leads Manon to construe Sarah's escape as a theft where Sarah is both the stolen property and its thief. This is one of those stories where you want to feel sorry for the characters because they have pretty terrible lives, but they're such horrible people that it's very difficult to sympathise with them.
