Second-Best Men by Fearne Hill

4.0

Since I read one of her books for the first time about a year ago, I have to say that this author has quickly become one of my favorites. Everything about her style attracts me, the humor, the banter, the different themes that each of his stories deal with, some of them touching on quite sensitive issues, and most of all, the characters.

Since she does not write about "perfect" characters and each one of them has flaws and virtues like every person has in this world, they seem "real" in a way in which the readers can identify, therefore, it is as if the situations they go through, the readers can see themselves reflected in them. For example, why does Rob, in his thirties, being single, having his job and his life well established, continue to stay in the closet? And that Evan knew for years that he was gay and yet remained married, until during a big fight with his ex-wife, he decided to tell her the truth about himself and that led to his divorce? Well, it's something I can relate to. I am in my forties, and still no one around me knows that I identify as someone on the ace spectrum. And perhaps my circumstances are different from the MCs in this story, but I did not lack opportunities to speak. I simply chose to remain silent and try to live the life I chose years ago in the best way, so I can understand their actions.

I really, really liked this book, maybe not as much as the ones in the Nailed It series by this same author (Awesome, incredible, wonderful books, so it's difficult to make me like her other books more) but I definitely liked this one. And in retrospect, I realize that, although it can be read as a standalone, perhaps I would have liked it more if I had read the previous books (which I didn't know there were previous books, shame on me for not checking first), which I plan to do as soon as can.

Having said all that, it was a nice story, with an almost insta-love vibe, but it hit the nail on the head with these two characters. Because even though they knew each other when Evan had an accident and Rob helped him, and they only spent about 48 hours together until Evan was able to return home, and they only met again 3 months later and only by coincidence, it can be said that they both left a deep mark on each other, which made them both, especially Rob, decide to leave their comfort zone, and dare to take that big step that he avoided for so many years.

The story has everything. It's funny with Rob and his love for his animals (he is a farmer, his pets are cows, a bull who is like his psychologist and a dog who can barely walk), it's romantic, Evan knows how to build the perfect "date"! It is sexy and steamy, without necessarily being overloaded with too many hot moments. And it shows the relationship between two adult men, with their well-established personalities and customs, who choose to accept each other as they are, learning to live together without needing to sacrifice part of themselves. in order to be happy.

I was given an advance copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
