We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast
by Jonathan Safran Foer
I never expected to dislike this book. Never mind to dislike it so very, very much.
As I listened to the last 40 minutes, I was so frustrated that he was still talking. It was painful like nails on a chalkboard. I kept begging him to quit talking, hoping there was an enormous appendix, index, and notes. The topic is necessary and true. I will work on becoming vegetarian as much as I'm able, and I will work to only purchase animal products that are ethically raised on small farms. But the telling of it was dreadful to me.
I think this was a story he wrote for his children about snippets of his beliefs, his hope's, his family lineage. I am not his family. Maybe if I'd known that was his means of story telling, I would have enjoyed it. Maybe. Maybe not.
Others I know enjoyed it. Maybe if I'd read the print format, and could have skimmed it, I would grant a higher rating. He was so very, very, very repetitive and went off track constantly. The topic was vital. The presentation was not in my skill set to enjoy. 20 pages should have done it nicely ... but it was far more pages than 20.
Update: Several of the poor reviews refer to his ranting of personal info as naval fuzz. Yep, I couldn't agree more considering his supposed focus on saving the planet.

Addendum: My nephew is a small farmer. When I mentioned this book to him, he asked what they said about the US Government's farm subsidies? They started in the 1950's. Big farmers get paid whether they harvest crops or not, no matter their methods. Us not buying their meat or dairy products will not make a difference in the production by large farms, and our tax dollars will continue to be wasted on it. Politics is encouraging our end.
Then too, this got me thinking about Mr. Buffets book about feeding the world. We cannot allow big farm to steal nutrients from the earth and not replace them. We also cannot allow the use of chemicals on our food. Ethical farming is vital to our survival.
This is all part of our weather and hunger issues. Neither of these were mentioned. Glad this review is a 1. Without explaining those things, and helping us determine how to end these things, we cannot begin to even attempt a genuine repair.
