The Night Watchman
by Louise Erdrich
This story was both classic Erdrich (her brand of magical realism that I love) and something new (some odd humor and differing viewpoints). Whatever it is worked for me. I loved Thomas and Patrice and Wood Mountain and the complex characters that Erdrich develops. I was fascinated to learn about termination and I think this is my preferred method for learning history: historical fiction that tells the human side of the story.
I started with the audiobook (narrated by the author) and I didn’t care for it. The reading was breathy and quiet with little to no difference between voices. Switched to print at about 1/3 of the way through. Took me longer to get through but I enjoyed it more.
4.75 rounded up!
