Howards End
by E.M. Forster
The theme of this book is 'Only Connect' - if only these characters could look beyond the trappings of their narrow worlds and break down the artificial barriers between them, how richer their lives would be.
I thought this book was beautifully written, with some wonderful descriptive and philosophical passages. The characters were just as much individual people as they were notions of ideals and schools of thought, which made them interesting. The setting is stifling and expansive at the same time, and the struggle of the characters against the restrictions of the period they live in was heartbreaking to see.
I found the ending to be narratively satisfying and yet devastating. I would recommend this book as something that makes you think and feel in novel ways.
