First and foremost, fantasy elements tend to bore me and world building can be… painful. Fortunately for me, this book seemed to introduce all those elements slowly and in smaller doses so I was able to keep up. I really enjoyed how this was structured and nothing felt forced or like we were rushing towards a big event. It felt as though the sequence of events happened just slowly enough to keep me interested and guessing.
As with most fantasy, it took me a while to become invested in these characters due to the slow burn nature but once I did, I didn’t want it to end. I think it’s hard not to swoon at fated mates… I mean, come on?! You’ve been waiting for the two MC’s to get it together for what feels like an eternity and then when it happens, there are a million things that make it 10x better. Surprise runes and bonds and dirty talk? Yes, please.
Saeris was such a badass. She wasn’t a damsel (at least never intentionally) and was always ready to run into danger or help fight no matter the risk or the fact that she was human. She was smarter than was good for her and stubborn as hell - couldn’t have asked for a better FMC.
Kingfisher was our classic broody male and we love him. I’m an absolute sucker for the MMC knowing exactly who he’s fated for and trying to pretend he doesn’t have a soft, squishy heart underneath his hard exterior. MEN. Acting emotionally unavailable while fully knowing it’s going to happen at some point. I think there is still a lot of room for growth in his character throughout the series and I can’t wait to see what’s to come.
And… I’m not crazy in saying that Carrion kind of stole the show, right? At first he seemed like an egotistical ass but… towards the end? Sort of adored him. He’s sarcastic and unapologetic and he ended up being right up there in the ranks with Kingfisher and Saeris. Everyone in this dang book was keeping these huge secrets and it made me laugh.
The story was so well plotted and the timing of every event was exactly what was needed for these characters and to keep the reader on their toes. Overall? LOVED IT. Forever love a book with fantasy elements that doesn’t make me feel like I’m too stupid to be reading it.
