While in the middle of another book that was boring me, I picked this off of my TBR shelf and consumed it in one sitting. If you're looking for an easy page-turner to get your head off of weightier topics, this would be a good choice. I think Mr. Adams has the thriller (pre-structured to make a great made-for-Netflix or made-for-TV movie) figured out to perfection. I also particularly applaud the well-done sleight-of-hand at the very end of the book that reveals a fun surprise. I would perhaps have granted the fifth star if I thought the story might sit with me beyond the last pages (the way Gillian Flynn's Dark Places and Sharp Objects did), but I don't think that's likely. The darkness in this novel isn't quite haunting enough to transport me into that state. Nonetheless, I do recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good action-packed cat-and-mouse story.
Graphic: Confinement, Death, Gun violence, Torture, Trafficking, and Kidnapping
Moderate: Alcoholism, Animal cruelty, Animal death, Body horror, Child abuse, and Blood
