Gravel Heart by Abdulrazak Gurnah
4.0
Seeing Gurnah in Portland at the Portland Arts and Lecture Series lead me to this early work. I finished it, and I am awarding myself the fictional "Reader's Booker Prize" for sticking with its interminable minutia, missed connections and delayed gratification.
However, I felt invited inside the life of someone I would never encounter in the Venn diagram of my life, and I stayed for dessert. I enjoyed the dynamics of family secrets, the tragedy of poor communication, the resilience of filial duty (albeit long awaited).
I watched some YouTube videos of Gurnah as well - he is an interesting man with many stories ahead I think...would definitely read other works.
