You Belong to Me by Karen Rose

Fantastic! This book kept me guessing all the way to the end. Such a riveting mystery and intense thriller, with complex and multi-dimensional characters.
The story centers around a medical examiner, Lucy Trask, who has a secret past that slowly unfolds throughout the novel. She deals with her trauma by having a secret life outside of work that I will not spoil, because it’s delightful. Then there’s JD Fitzpatrick, a detective who is recovering from the tragic death of his wife that had happened a few years back. Their worlds collide when someone close to Lucy is found dead and soon becomes clear that someone is targeting her.
The other interesting aspect of the story is the villain. He’s definitely got murderous sociopath vibes but his motives are at least commendable—as he’s seeking justice for the rape and murder of his sister 20 years ago. You get a lot of the story from his perspective and—given his cruel disregard for collateral damage—he is hard to sympathize with, but it becomes immediately apparent that the victims on his list are largely there for a reason.
I love this story because it’s a solid blend of fast-paced, gritty suspense and great character arcs. I was captivated from start to finish and can’t wait to dig into the next book in the Baltimore series.
