The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
I love this book! It's full of exaggeration, drama, mystery, and metaphor. It reads like a gothic mystery, which I don't typically like as much, but this author loves his characters and his delight in them is infectious. It's a profoundly human story set in a profoundly difficult time, and is very sensitively and beautifully written. I wish I could read Spanish. I suspect there's a good deal of play with language, some of which comes through in the translation but I get the sense there's much more that can only be truly appreciated in the original language and by readers attuned to the culture. But even though I got the sense there was more to this book, I didn't feel that I was missing out on anything. This book is richly layered as is, and I enjoyed it immensely.
