Crocodile on the Sandbank
by Elizabeth Peters
Took me a little while to get into this, but Amelia won me over. I love the characterisation—she's smart and driven and not too worried about convention, but she's still to a certain extent a product of her time. She's also persnickety and impatient and sarcastic and...not terribly self-aware? But in a way that lets the reader know that the author is very aware of this. So...yeah, it was pretty satisfying.
Not sure whether or not I'll continue with the series (I'd be happy to, but it's just that my to-read list is never-ending...), though the ending of this book rather made me wonder whether it was meant to be a standalone. Curious to see how the relationship plays out in subsequent books.
