The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family by Ibtihaj Muhammad

4.0

A girl is excited about her older sister's first day wearing hijab at school. Her sister has chosen a hijab of a beautiful blue color. A few hecklers are acknowledged but ignored, leaving a feeling of pride, strength, and conviction. Other students at school shown in illustrations are diverse, including size, though no visibly disabled rep. Great read-aloud for discussing wearing or doing something new that you know is expressing your authentic self even though not everyone will like it. Also good for discussing why some (often white straight cis Christian) people have such strong feelings about different identity expression.
