Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb
4.0

I'd say it took me about 75 pages to get invested in the story fully, and now that I have I know that I'll be reading the other 15 books set in this world.

Magical realism has to be my favourite genre of writing and this fit the bill perfectly. Great characterisation and story with just a sprinkling of fantasy to make me perk up my ears and ask the all important question: And then what happens?

Near the end of the book I lost a ton of sleep, two nights in a row, because I stayed up to read 'just another page.' All the characters that appeared, no matter how briefly, were rich and interesting characters. Whether I liked them or not I wanted to know more about them.

As the first book in a trilogy, I was intrigued by the way that it ended; not everything was dealt with, but it was dealt with enough that the book could have stood alone had the rest of the story never seen the light of day. Fortunately that was not the case and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
