The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent

4.0

God, i love lizzy dent. She writes such famously English characters (who have a lot of “bite” as she says) with just the best amount of wit and sarcasm. They’re definitely acquired tastes, with a penchant for trouble and sassiness, but i love them! I love the English humor! It’s a specific kind that just works for me as a reader.

The twist in the end nearly threw me off my rocker, all at once expected AND unexpected. It’s messy, it’s complicated, but it just makes sense, you know? Add to that Lizzy Dent’s very specific way of writing about different places—and you’re bound to get the travel bug. Her writing is very food centric (and she does the actual research on food!!! I loved reading the conversation & the acknowledgements in the end), which really helps put you in the right setting.

I liked the slow burn of the romance here, and overall how organic everything just felt. The ensemble of characters, focus on the important issue of alcoholism, and well-fleshed out familial backgrounds for each of the characters… A stunning reminder of why I’ve grown to fall in love with Lizzy’s writing. Her FMCs are just so unapologetically themselves and out there, you know? But perfectly balanced, too—just the right amount of hijinks and sarcasm and fun. A refreshing break from our lovable, picture perfect leads.

Now, to forage some porcini…
