The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough

5.0

Epic, sprawling, family saga...I think that description was specifically designed for The Thorn Birds. As a child of the 80's, I remember how all the women in my life were obsessed with the TV miniseries based on this book. I now completely understand why. And while part of me is sorry I waited so long to read this, the other part is glad I read this during a summer when it was exactly the book I needed.

I was completely engrossed in the struggles of the Cleary family living out in the Australian outback. The story is primarily focused on the only Cleary daughter, Meggie, and the local priest, Ralph de Bricassart. Following their lives from Meggie's childhood, this is a love story that can never fully be realized. But it is such an amazing ride.

If you enjoy epic family dramas and you haven't yet read this, I can not recommend this enough. This one is going into my favorite books of all-time list!
