The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enríquez

4.75

This short story collection is off-putting if you don't know what you're getting into. It's weird and violent and dark and gory, but it's also vile and disgusting. I have a strong stomach and some of these stories made me feel sick. If you go in expecting excrement and rot and horrible things done to and with bodies, living and dead, you'll have a better time - or at least a better idea of what to expect. Don't read any of these while eating. But they're also fascinating, in a horrible sort of way. It's like seeing the body of a stranger who died violently - you know you shouldn't look, but you want to anyway. Every single story is a sick combination of fascination and disgust. I read through it with a ferocity normally reserved for wolves who've spotted their first meal in weeks, and I also feel like something this disgusting shouldn't be read. Make of that what you will.
