Comet in Moominland
by Tove Jansson
That was a delightful read. Just what I needed.
The story of a comet and Moomintroll's attempts to find out whether said Comet will destroy everything and everyone. To do so he sets off with his friend, Sniff, to get some scientific information from the scientists in the Observatory. To get there they undertake a series of adventures, meet new friends and watch as the Comets impending arrival causes all sorts of problems.
It is all rather sweet and lovely. Tove Jansson's writing is clear, clever and the world-building is rather magnificent. This is, of course, a children's book but with the hidden depths that many a great children's book has.
The illustrations too are delightful. I've got a pile of Tove Jansson books to read and I'm looking forward to it immensely.
