The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

4.0

Earth is slowing down. We follow the impact of the spin slowing down through Julia, an eleven year old girl. The days get longer, time is thrown off, night and day change. We focus primarily on Julia and her family and her immediate neighborhood as everyone adjusts to this new normal. It’s a fascinating story. This is a quiet story about a huge event and is written so well. I felt so much for these characters, especially Julia as she’s dealing with the slowing but also still having to go to school, navigating friendship changes, liking a boy, and all the other typical preteen things.  I loved the ideas presented here about what would happen, how different people would react, how the greater society would have to change.  I really enjoyed this unique story, told so beautifully through Walker’s writing.
