P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

3.0

Holly is a new widow in Ireland, trying to come to terms with her husband Gerry succumbing to his brain tumor and dying. As it turns out, he left her a series of letters to help her adapt to this new life, all of its changes, and the odd array of friends and family that remain constant.

I was one of the many people who say the movie before I even realized that the book existed. As always, the movie creators made some drastic changes to the book: half the characters were cut, most scenes were removed, and even the basic setting was changed.

They created a completely different entity. While the movie was more whimsical, hopeful, and romantic, the book was more down to earth and grounded. It's possible to life both but impossible to compare them.

Some of the other reviewers were complaining about how clearly this is someone's first novel. It is basic, doesn't have those frills, and maybe Cecelia Ahern had a long way to go before being a brilliant novelist, but all of that is what makes the story. It's not one for literary fluff. It's a tale about grief and all the twist and turns that come with it. So it may not be pretty, and it doesn't have to be.
