shellquig 's review for:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer
I've seen this book at the bookstore a number of times but it's arduous title always had me turning away. It wasn't until my bookclub chose it that I finally picked it up. This was one of those "Don't judge a book by it's title" moments. I loved this book. It's been a long time since I've read a book in the format of letters and the authors did a great job of utilizing this style. The voice was strong and engaging. The characters were full of life and kept me constantly flipping to the next page.
As a post WWII era novel this story did a great job of communicating how Guernsey had to work towards recovery while pulling you more into the lives of the individual characters than getting mired in the war. I would highly suggest this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and especially to those interesting in the era surrounding WWII. A beautiful written story with an incredible message of hope and love.
