After Ever Happy by Anna Todd

WTH? I'm so mad that I put so much time into this long, drawn-out series for it end in such a rushed and poorly written manner. I gave the first one four stars because, despite how toxic the relationship was that the author depicts, it was written so that it draws you in and makes you not want to stop reading until you find out what happens next. The first book ends mid-scene, drawing you into book 2, which I ended up giving only two stars because it was just more of the same kind of drama over and over and over again. After reading book 3, I had high hopes for the last book because that book had more story development and involved more than Tessa and Hardin going to parties and doing stupid things to make each other mad.

I thought book 4 would be more about the storyline it left off with in book 3, but instead we get more of Hardin being an out-of-control lunatic again, wiping away any growth that he showed in book 3. I normally don't binge books, but I ended up reading this one in less than two days (partially because I couldn't sleep, so I just kept reading). I forget where it picked up, but there was a certain point in this story where I thought I was going to pleased with how the series would end, but then it went to hell again.

SPOILERS: The whole thing about each one thinking the other left Hardin's college graduation and not speaking for three months was just weird and out of character for both of them. Then we have this whole meetup in New York where they fall back into each other and you think the story will progress nicely from that point. Then we throw in the book, and all hell breaks loose, but the author leads us to believe that it will be okay because Tessa reads the whole thing and seems to be okay with it. From there, the book and the entire series takes a huge downward spiral. WTH was that? I felt like the author got to that point and suddenly had hit a deadline and just needed to throw in a lot of anything to finish the story. As a reader who invested so much time in these really long books, I'm pretty mad about it. The last portions of this book didn't feel anything like any of the story that came before it. It was rushed, truly disappointing, and frustrating. I can't even imagine that the author herself would be pleased with this ending. It was just bad, so very bad, and I'm mad that I wasted so much time on it. I would have been better off stopping at book 3 and creating my own ending in my head.

It's safe to say that I will read no more of this author's books. She can write drama (no doubt), but clearly she cannot write an ending. I'm so glad it’s over.
