Keanu Reeves is Not in Love With You: The Murky World of Online Romance Fraud by Becky Holmes
4.0
I've followed Becky on Twitter for some time, and as a result pre-ordered Keanu Reeves is Not In Love With You on Unbound some time ago. It was absolutely worth the wait, and I've enjoyed every minute with the book, even if some areas have left me wanting.
If you're familiar with Becky, you'll find her sense of humour throughout, making this a joy to read. However, there does seem to be a bit of a disjoint between the balance of humour and the seriousness of the subjects being discussed here. Becky tries to cover all aspects of romance fraud, but some areas are only briefly skirted over - such as the African 'Yahoo boys' and the horrendous crimes tied to their scams. True, had Becky delved more into the real criminal underbelly here, it would have been a very different book indeed -- but it's something worth exploring.
But as for what is here, it's a great overview of the effects, reasons and aftermath of romance fraud. I loved Becky's own humorous conversations, but I also lapped up the stories of victims, which she retells respectfully and in gripping detail. While I do wish there was more of a deeper dive, I respect what Becky has done here and I heartily recommend the read for anyone who's either (a) chuckled at one of her tweets in the past or (b) wants to know more about how romance fraud happens.
