I did not like this at all, and am a little confused about all the raving reviews. The ending made no sense, nor did the first chapter. The names were so so stupid I couldn’t get over them, and I was rolling my eyes every time Acker used the fmc’s full name because it was so bad to me. I don’t like 1st person single pov in a fantasy, and I understand that’s a me problem, however it just absolutely does not work here, especially with the “twist.” The fmc was unlikable, the mmc was a caricature of all the dark broody mmc’s that have come before him, and the entire book really needed another read through by a strong editor with a red pen and endless ink in it.
