This book started off so well but by the end of it I was nothing short of completely irritated by the characters and the author.
It alternates a narrative between 1970’s Sheffield and 2012/13 Edinburgh and Adelaide, with two characters who were a couple in the 70’s and who find themselves communicating via Twitter messages from either side of the planet in modern times.
The young Dan & Alison were fun, interesting, naive and enjoyable characters, and it was enjoyable reading their relationship blossom. However the Dan and Alison of modern times were selfish, egotistical and lacked a serious depth of character.
Th author tackles some really serious issues in this novel - when I say tackles I mean she gives them a brief mention and that’s it. Sexual assault, eating disorders and miscarriage are discussed and dealt with in such a blase way it left a serious bad taste in my mouth.
Overall, a good idea for a book but the characters bored and irritated me and I feel that the author shouldn’t be tackling such serious issues unless she handles them with care and dignity.
